Rearranging My Shelves for Autumn

It’s time to have a casual chat and a simple bookshelf rearrangement again! It’s been a while since I last did my bookshelf rearrangement for my summer colors. Now, I’m looking at a more autumnal vibe. I’m thinking purples, oranges, and browns. But don’t worry, this isn’t just a post about rearranging my shelves. I will use this time to chat casually about things I’m doing and a few upcoming projects. This is meant to be a little cozier than the usual content I put out there, so grab some tea or whatever else you drink and let’s get started.

The Color Scheme

First of all, I need to pick a color scheme. Last time, I grabbed blues and yellows to represent summer. This time, I’m focusing on some purples, blacks, oranges, and browns. Those will be the colors that dominate my shelf for the next few months. In addition, I’ve decided I will keep the scattered, chaotic look I’ve had during the summer. I like it and feel that it adds some depth to my shelves!

To begin, I’m going to take all the books off my shelves and then sort them by color so I have a clear picture of what books I have at my disposal.

Hopefully, My Last Shelf Rearrangement in This Space

I hope this is the last time you’ll see me rearrange my bookshelves in this space. See, I’ve started looking for a house and hope to have one purchased before the end of the year. I’ll then do some renovating and essential prep work before moving in. It’s been a while since I’ve had a space to call completely my own—I sold my previous house back in 2020, so we’re coming up on three years without me having my own house. I’m excited for what this new space will look like; I’ve already got some ideas, and I think my video quality will thrive once I’m moved in and ready.

For now, though, we’ll be shooting the next few months of content in front of this shelf space I’ve had for a while, so it’s best to shake it up and make it look as appealing and interesting as possible. Enjoy it while it lasts!

Reading Slump

Over the last several months, I’ve been in what the cool kids call a reading slump. Well, maybe not a reading slump exactly, but something similar. I’ve been so bogged down with work and completely exhausted that my reading pace has slowed down considerably. I started Hunger of the Gods by John Gwynne back in June, and I am still working through it. It’s crazy because I love the story, the writing, and the world, but I’m having a hard time setting dedicated time aside for it. I hope this will change after I’ve finished with a few of the projects I have going on, like looking for a house and advancing my career.

Book Choices

As was the case last time, I need to pick some books that will have their covers facing outward. For this arrangement, I’m going to go with Soul Arts, Equal Rites, Piranesi, and some other books with similar color schemes! I'm especially excited to finally feature Soul Arts on my shelf.

Gaming Channel

Despite how busy I am with my vast multitude of projects, I still have new ones on my mind for the future. One thing I would love to do is start a second channel dedicated to gaming. I love stories told in games, but that isn’t really what my main channel is about. I’ll talk about games here and there, but I would never post a video of myself playing a game on the channel. It wouldn’t perform well and wouldn’t be on-brand with the other content I’m putting out there. Starting a second channel seems daunting to me right now, but it is something I’ve been considering. I’d love to do more in-depth videos about games, especially upcoming releases like God of War: Ragnarok or Lies of P. Maybe it’ll happen, maybe it won’t. I’m just thinking about it.

D&D Campaign

My current D&D campaign has a little less than a year of runway left on it. I’ve been running this one since the very beginning of 2021, so it’s crazy to think that we’re coming to its conclusion here pretty soon. By pretty soon, I mean next June, but that’s still coming up faster than I think any of us realize. I’ve already got the rest of the campaign outlined, we’re back to our regular biweekly sessions, and I’m gearing up for the path to this grand finale. While I’m doing that, though, I’m thinking about my next campaign. I want to start recording our sessions and creating actual-play content. I’d make a grand production out of it, and I think it’d be a lot of fun for everyone involved. We’ll see where things are at when our next campaign begins, but there’s a good chance I will start a channel dedicated to D&D actual-play content late next year!

Setting up the Shelves

Now it’s time to start putting everything on the shelves. That’s the best part! I’m making sure to stagger heights, styles, and other attributes to add as much interest and depth to my shelves as possible. I want to keep some of my books facing with their pages out, too, since I liked the oddness of that on my previous shelf’s arrangement. It gave the shelves more character than just having spines and covers outward. Once I’ve got this done, I get to move on to lighting the scene.

Main Channel Content

I’m not sure how I feel about my main channel’s content right now. It’s drifting heavily into advice for writers, which was never my intention for the channel. I want to keep creating essays about things I do or don’t enjoy in stories, but I think I need to be careful to ensure that I don’t come off as an authortube channel. That’s not what I am. Of course, I’m still struggling to find my exact channel identity because I’m not a booktube channel, either. I know that people have primarily enjoyed my essays on storytelling. Still, I need to focus more on striking a better balance with my content so that I don’t become a cheap knockoff of great channels like Hello Future Me. I don’t know what these thoughts will change, but it’s something that has been on my mind since my Chosen One Trope video took off.

And Done!

And the shelves are done! The finishing touch is lighting. It’s important to ensure that my lights don’t illuminate me in orange. Some highlights can be colored to a degree, but I don’t want to repeat the violently orange appearance prevalent in my early videos because I didn’t understand lighting. Once I’m satisfied with the lighting, it’s time to present my new autumnal shelf backdrop!

Conclusion

Now my shelves are finally ready for autumn content! I hope that you enjoyed this post and got something out of it. I rambled a bit, but that’s the point of these shelf rearrangement posts! It’s an opportunity to get some things out there that don’t fit in other content. With any luck, I’ll be able to have a new shelf rearrangement video soon that’ll feature my new home. Fingers crossed.
